As a recovering survivor, I battle with anxiety from time to time. I also know that many people do. You can begin to read the meaning of things and overthink even the little things.
While this can be hard, you can develop some coping mechanisms. I will give you some case studies, to help you understand what anxiety looks like.
If you keep calling someone, and the person is not picking up, you may assume the person does not want to speak with you.
Now, maybe in the past, you have dealt with people who would ignore your calls, or even ignore your feelings, so you want to play several scenarios in your head. You can practice the following coping mechanisms.
Ask questions. The only way you will not go crazy, is to ask questions. You want to ask your friend, why your calls don’t get picked up.
You want to ask a colleague at work who ignores you if something is wrong. You want to make sure that you have exhausted all options before you lose your mind.
Look for patterns. Before you conclude that people are deliberately ignoring you, or want you to develop anxiety, you want to look for ways of behavior.
If they are consistently responsive, you can rationalize their unavailability based on their consistencies in the past.
Prepare for worst-case scenarios. What does it mean to prepare for worst-case scenarios? This is another strategy in my book, Broken Child, Broken Adult.
