SOME 2 YEARS AGO
Our Social Entrepreneurversary!
As I reflect on my 2 years of building ideyforyou
I could not but think of the many things I must say or write about.
The many mistakes made that led to our innovative solutions and models for DV survivors.
So, I thought to come on here, to share with you two valuable lessons from the last two years.
1. STAY TRUE TO THE MISSION. It is hard to start any business, particularly a social enterprise because, for you, the mission has to come before profit.
And honestly, the people you will be collaborating with or at some point hiring may not care about that. So, what is the lesson for you? If you change your business model every time to trend or go viral or because you are afraid you will lose a partnership, then you gradually will lose that unique flavor that sets you apart.
2016-2018, I made beads, sold shoes, and made headgears, even though my heart was in social entrepreneurship;
In 2019, I ventured into international study coaching. But I knew my heart was in social entrepreneurship, but to make a quick income, study abroad coaching seemed like the profitable thing to do;
But when I ended a toxic marriage, the same study abroad clients gradually stopped doing business with us, due to smear campaigns.
It was while navigating that I realized that I needed to stay true to my WHY. I found my why in ideyforyou.
With ideyforyou, I can tell my survivor story over and over without feeling like a broken record or feeling like some clients will stop buying from us.
I tried several ventures to meet up to family expectations, and social pressure, but in all my business journeys from 2018 till date, about 7 years.
I know one thing for sure: Stay true to the calling and your tribe will find you/your story will bring them to you.
2. START WITH THE BIG PICTURE. I know I am very ambitious because I always keep the big picture in mind. The thing is: A CEO can’t be just anyone.
In my 2-year journey, I found that it is rewarding to start with the big picture in mind.
- Keeping the big picture in mind means, making that iconic brand logo that stands the test of time, and flexible, and can go with any innovative solution you create in your journey.
- Keeping the big picture in mind means you build a website that is second to none and communicates your brand easily, and effectively.
-Keeping the big picture in mind means preparing your elevator pitch even if the opportunity isn’t in sight.
-Keeping the end in mind means you create that 5-10-year plan with fancy goals even if you don’t know how.
