How to survive Intergenerational trauma Part 1
If you can’t explain why you feel or carry so much hurt, read this!
📍HOW TO SURVIVE INTERGENERATIONAL TRAUMA
So, it’s been a long time I published anything about #healing or that relates to #therapy.
So, this week, I will be sharing series of articles on inter-generational trauma.
Let’s get into it.
📍What is intergenerational trauma?
Intergenerational trauma is a discrete form of trauma that occurs when traumatic effects are passed across generations without exposure to the original event. (Danieli, 1998).
📍This means, when people who belong to a given family or household #experience trauma, they may carry those hurtful experiences into the generation(s) after them.
Why does this happen often?
This is because children often mirror behaviors.
“A lion only gives birth to a lion.”
Although there are situations whereby the child may become a complete opposite of the parent/caregiver.
📍Consider this scenario; A child repeatedly watches the parents argue and get physically violent with each other, such a child may internalize such hurtful experience.
📍Over time, this may cause the child to become violent later in life, or tolerate violence and unconsciously express the childhood trauma in other relationships.
📍Such relationships could include, and not limited to work relationships, friendships, and other kinds of relationships.
So tell me, how will you define intergenerational trauma?
