Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy
Fall, 2023
Please write an essay explaining why you want to be admitted to the Health Administration and Policy Graduate Program. Discuss your personal
experiences, beliefs, interests, and previous training and education, and indicate why you wish to pursue a career in health care.
Martin Luther King once said: “Of all the forms of discrimination and inequalities, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhumane.” Indeed, health administration and policy is crucial for building a more just and humane society.
When I began to plan my exit from an abusive relationship, I felt more traumatized by the social and legal service systems.
The particular events that caused me the most trauma are the endless court proceedings that continue to stall the dissolution of my legal marriage to this abuser, and which have caused me to be deprived of access to the children from the same marriage,
the lack of public health policy that legally criminalizes abuse of the internet ( for instance, myself and my social media followers, continue to receive emotionally triggering messages from this abuser),
to the immigration laws that complicate the lives of resident aliens, (who come from other countries, where they have had previous experiences of violence or trauma, but continue to be exposed to these violent experiences, through new media) in the United States,
to receive legal protections, especially while escaping abusive experiences.
These complexities are the very motivation for why I have developed a commitment to understanding how the social and legal systems retraumatize survivors of domestic violence and other vulnerable or marginalized populations.
I worked at social service agencies to further my understanding of these complex issues.
I interacted with the Cook Country Court House and other legal service providers in the Chicago area. However, these concerns persist in my professional experiences in these different positions.
Therefore, I am applying to the Graduate Program in Public Health and Policy to:
Develop a research-driven approach to understanding systemic retraumatization of survivors of violence, incarceration, or other traumatic experiences.
Develop research-community-advocacy-centered approaches to solving the problem of systemic retraumatization and other health-related issues.
To become an effective leader and professional who translates research findings into actionable steps that influence policies in such a way that mitigates systemic retraumatization and increases public health outcomes for marginalized groups.
Describe how the Program’s curriculum will help you achieve your goals. Also, indicate which healthcare settings and/or professional positions interest you the most.
Furthermore, the Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy allows students to choose a course of study in health care and health policy that closely matches their interests and career plans making this the ideal program for me.
In other words, the curriculum will provide me with an interdisciplinary perspective on systemic retraumatization's socioeconomic, mental health, and social justice outcomes, which I consider integral parts of my entrepreneurial, social work, and legal interests.
Therefore, I envisage that this curriculum, through its interdisciplinary scope of bringing students from 5 schools, will enhance my professional education in the social work program at the Crown Family School (while developing the skills to become an efficient clinical social worker),
foster my entrepreneurial agenda, through the work that I currently do, at the life coaching company, ideyforyou, which I founded a year ago, while also preparing me for future admission to the Uchicago law, where I will further develop my activism interests.
If you are applying for the Global Health track, please discuss your interest in global health.
The international scope of my lived experiences motivated me to apply to the Kiphart Scholars program.
On the other hand, I believe that having a deeper understanding of the healthcare systems is integral for my scholarship at the University of Chicago, and the GHAP certificate program, which is US health-focused, will complement my global health education through the Kiphar Scholars program in Global Health and Social Development.
As evidence of my outstanding profile, I have received two prestigious scholarships, which significantly contribute to my systemic retraumatization scholarship.
Namely, the Dean’s Scholarship worth $30,000 and the Kiphart Global Health Scholarship worth $5,000 stipend, with additional travel expenses. Offering me admission and available scholarships and or fellowships will further enhance my interdisciplinary experience at the University of Chicago.
In conclusion, offering me admission into the GHAP program and also providing me with the generous fellowships available to students on this track, is an investment in my undying commitment to reducing the injustices experienced through the healthcare systems.
