"How will you pay for your visa fees with only 25,000 Naira monthly stipend?”
This was what a knowledgeable professor told us...
How will you pay for your visa fees even if you get admitted?
“I just finished law school, took the bar, and I am also running my business.”
That was it for me!
The life changing conversation that just reminded me again how knowledge from the right people, moves you further to your goals.
I met her at the University of Chicago’s Polsky Exchange center.
A black skinned Queen, who would now show me how to ace the LSAT.
As I walked back home, and smiled at the beautiful selfies we took,
I was reminded again,
That not everyone who is knowledgeable has the knowledge your specific life goal or a specific problem you are trying to solve!
…………………………………………………………………………………
Let me take you back to the story of my #University of #Ibadan friend, who also wanted to relocate, to help you understand.
You know how students generally can’t whisper things quietly right?
That was how we talked too loudly about our plans.
We heard footsteps approaching…
It was one of our professors…
Eerrrmmmm…
“I heard it is difficult to study abroad if you don’t have money ooo. You people are struggling o, how do you plan to even pay your visa fees? How much are you both making again? Twenty thousand naira.
That can’t even pay application fee to one university How will you ever find the money? EErrrrmmmm…?”
When a #professor old enough to be your parent casts doubts on your plan, these things get into your head!
Like this shit is real!
This professor doubted our plans because of lack of knowledge.
And we did not know enough either,
so we began to believe what this professor said.
……………………………………………
We were all ignoramus- in the matters of Abroad V. Graduates.(pun intended lol)
For like 3 months, we went silent about our relocation plans
because the professor got into our heads.
You know how you stop chasing a goal because someone gets into your head.
That was my life for almost a year after that conversation.
But things became different when I began to ask those who had succeeded in that area that I want to succeed in.
I stopped listening to my graduate student friend, who was as ignorant as I was- or that professor, whose knowledge is obviously limited- (especially in matters of #relocating #abroad).
I started talking to friends, who were living in these countries. Tose who are a part of the system.
I can’t ignore the number of times people tried to get into my head, telling me to stay in an #abusive #relationship
I can’t ignore the number of times people tried to get into my head, telling me I am a #mom of two, and what good will be trying to have a #sexy #body do to me?
I can’t ignore the number of times people tried to get into my head, telling me I why I left a #PhD to pursue a joint #social work and #law degrees track.
But those who try to get into my head, have no understanding of the ways the #social and #legal systems perpetuate abuse for domestic violence survivors, and the impact that my research will have on these two intersecting fields- #law and #social work.
I can’t ignore the number of times people have tried to get into my head,
telling me it is risky to be a full-time entrepreneur, as American bills will humble you.
But just like I won the voices that tried to get into my head when that professor doubted my plans,
I have won several other voices and every day; I surround myself with people who know more than I do.
See, I have failed too much in life to want to live life without asking for help or getting a coach.
You should not make that mistake.
Don’t let voices get into your head.
And it is easier to not allow that, if you have a life coach.
And it is easier to not allow that, if you are in a community where you can get the help you need for your life’s goals.
