Kings Don’t Dance?
She walked towards a lady. She whispered into her ears. Then the lady smiled loudly. I had no idea what they were talking about. BM walked in my direction, and all the group members came toward me. Next, they surrounded me. I was unsettled. Then they formed a curve around me. Each one took a position according to their height. They invited me to join the formation. I should have known! They wanted me to dance with them. I was shy and completely caught off guard. I have made poster presentations at the biggest conferences and had people gather around me, and still remain confident. This was different.
I was totally caught off guard. I joined the dance. I moved left. I moved right. I did not know the dance. But as I watched them, I began to pick the steps. The dance was not easy to follow. But I could follow the songs. I have heard the song at some clubs in the Southside of Chicago. BM knew the song, I followed suit.
“I don' charge my energy, I no get time for no enemy
Tori pe won o le tomi
Nothing wey person ever see
Omo nothing wey person never see
Forgeti, I say fashi..
Anybody, wey no want to soji
Anybody, wey no dey carry body
Knack am something, ah-ah
Knack am something
To ba ta fele, fele
Knack am something
I enjoyed the song a lot! We were both panting. We moved away from the group and found a place to sit. There was a bar just on the other side of the room. We found a good spot. I could not stop humming the song. Then BM told me how those songs kept her going when things got really heated between her and her partner and when people started saying terrible things about her in the African Students’ Association she belonged to. “
Reflection: I think about this short story about my life- which is written in my book, How to Kill Your Spouse. This story about dance, reminds me of my freedom, which I find daily through dance, and it is so amazing how an imagination became reality.
I live in Chicago now, and I dance everyday, lol.
