THE PRIVILEGE IN BLACK
Through out this week, I was overwhelmed by emails of one offer or acceptance or the other;
A few days ago, I had myself thinking about all the numerous funding opportunities I had recieved.
From scholarships as low as $250, to as high as $50,000 and counting.
But here is why I am writing this.
There is Privilege in Being Black.
Black, for the purpose of this article represents difference.
I am the only African (not African American) in my MSW program.
I sometimes feel the weight of having a different perspective in the room, but I remind myself that my kind of blackness is a privilege.
This privilege has earned me a voice, not only in my class, but I sit on a global health and development committe, because I bring my black voice into the room. I am overwhelmed, but I use my black privilege.
I am a very smart and highly educated resident alien in the US, and I do not have a green card yet.
Yes, I am limited, because there are things I am very skilled at doing, but I just cannot, because I do not have the privileges of citizens.
But I use my black privilege to hunt down every opportunity that is only open to residents aliens.
I am overwhelmed, but I have recieved several awards as a resident alien. I use my black privilege.
I am a survivor of domestic violence, and I suffer from systemic retraumatization, engendered by the court-systems.
Yes, I am very very very stressed, but I have used the privilege of being uno pluribus, who suffer this kind of systemic injustice to tell my black privilege story.
My black privilege is the reason I have authored a very unique book, How to Kill Your Spouse.
My black privilege is the reason ideyforyou resonates with her target audience.
My black privilege is the reason I am the host of Trauma in Diaspora Evening Show.
My black privilege is complex, overwhelming, stressful, but in its scary Medusa, lies the sweet and charming Venus.
My blackness is stressful but incredibly gorgeous!
What is your blackness?
