Few days ago, I watched college students from the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois Chicago, pitch their College New Venture Ideas at the CNVC, right at Chicago Booth Business School.
After I was done pitching to this group: “The next question was: what results do you have? Why should we believe you?”
And that line is familiar- because just three years ago, after I experienced a visa denial- see, everyone gets denied visa to come to the United States- mine was very different.
It was different, because everyone was looking up to me. If you are an immigrant from a developing country, you will relate!
But here’s my point today- I could not prove beyond reasonable doubts to the consular office that I was deserving of that visa- eve though I had all my facts- a fully funded scholarship and other things checked.
So, the first time I began life coaching, many people doubted me. They asked if they could trust me, if I was still in my home country, and telling them about moving abroad.
The next time I trained another group, they asked if they could trust me, even though I had secure scholarship, but did not have a visa.
Just imagine being put on the spot like that repeatedly!
What then do you do, when people doubt if your success story is really a success story?
Teach about your failures.
If you are wondering if you really do have something to share with the world, or a business you can start this holiday, start with your painful experiences.
People buy because they are trying to avoid pain, and you can help them do so.
Host a training and show people how to avoid the pain you have gone through.
In the next post, I will share 10-15 pain points (from my lived experiences) that can serve as the basis for building your first online business model.
